Today we want to comment on a current issue of concern to the ruminant livestock sector and we want to try to avoid it: Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease.
This disease affects both ruminant animals living in domestic environments and those living in the wild.
Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) is an infectious viral disease spread by vectors, specifically insects of the genus Culicoides spp.
In cattle, it can cause symptoms of moderate intensity that resolve on their own within a period of approximately two weeks.
While sheep are susceptible to infection, but generally show mild clinical signs, goats are fairly resistant to the disease.
In addition to affecting livestock, EHD can also put deer at risk, as well as other species such as fallow deer and roe deer.
The causative agent of EHD is the virus belonging to the family Reoviridae, specifically to the genus Orbivirus.
This virus shares numerous morphological and structural characteristics with other viruses belonging to the same genus, with particular similarity to bluetongue virus.
The incubation period of the disease varies from 2 to 10 days before symptoms appear.
How to try to avoid the EHD?
